Where Will YOU Be In Two Years?

Two years ago my giant client {read: ONLY CLIENT} was about to be sold and I was about to be without my steady income.

But I had a book idea.

A year ago I had zero speaking gigs lined up.

But my book was finished.

Six months ago I had no show, no interviews.

But I had some speaking gigs and a crazy show idea.

Three months ago, almost to the day, I up and hightailed it to Nashville for a yet-to-be-launched show idea because NYT Bestselling Author Donald Miller had said yes to an interview and dad-gum if I wasn’t going to make it happen.

Dreams are for living, y’all.

And I realize today, now, as I’m sitting here in the Dallas airport, headed to California to get paid to speak, and interview 5 amazing entrepreneurs, that I am literally living my dream. It’s hard for me to sometimes stop and realize what’s happening. I am so focused on what’s off in the distance I miss the beauty around me. I remember once I told a boss he was so focused on the forest he was going to walk into a tree. I meant that a little differently, but similar idea. I hope you’ll take some inspiration from this today:

A LOT CAN CHANGE IN TWO YEARS.

Also, this is the first time I’ve really stopped and thought the timeline through. Did you notice things rapidly sped up for me after the first year? Once you have momentum, you can make an effort to rapidly double down on change. If a window of opportunity so much as cracks open for you today I hope you pry at that thing like your life depends on it.  Get your hand through, get your arm through, suck in your gut and awkwardly dance the rest of the way through that opening. This might be one of my defining qualities, actually. My capacity for what I’m describing, especially the awkward dancing part.

You might rip your shirt. You might lose a fingernail and gain some bruises. But trust me, two years from now, if you’re still stuck in the same suffocating space, you will look at that window, finally crawl out and think why didn’t I do this years ago?!

Push yourself to start today. It might take some time to flesh out your podcast idea, finish your book, write your business plan, etc. but after that, the second you pick up some momentum, I dare you to double down. I dare you to run when you are only starting to get tired. I dare you to build up the courage to finally leap, then land, and then leap again immediately after that!

Let me know how it goes. I wouldn’t be surprised if six months from now and you look up from your dream and realize, hey, I’m living this! I’m living my dream!

Dreams are for living, y’all. Go live yours.

Update: The next day, I made a Quick Pep Talk to go with this post:
