Who I’m Following in 2018

Friday Favorites: Influencer Edition

Question: How diverse is the group of people you follow closely online?

One of the keys I've found in studying successful people is that they pull inspiration, information, and motivation from varied, unique places. If everyone you listen to, watch, read, and learn from is very similar to you, don't expect to grow very much. If you're trying to build a stand out brand as an entrepreneur, blogger, etc, you'll set yourself apart from everyone in your circle if you gather new ideas and fresh perspectives from outside your genre.

Here are my personal favorites and why. I hope you'll give all of them a listen/watch/read!

  1. Michael Hyatt, specifically his new podcast on leadership. You, my frand, are a leader. If you weren't you wouldn't be attracted to my motivational content. You lead your family, your downline, your employees, your accountability group. I also recommend all of his books!
  2. Angie Lee, because her podcast, Rich B*tch, challenges my beliefs about money, she is funny, and I also learn a lot about supplements and health from her as well. If you're not an entrepreneur you may not love all the episodes. I don't know if she eats real food or if it's mostly green juice and apple cidar vinegar but I'm down for it and love watching her Insta stories.
  3. Keltie Knight on Instagram. She is in the thick of Hollywood, but is so honest, humble, funny and inspiring. I hope to have her on the show soon to pick her brain because she started out as a dancer and reinvented herself as a red carpet correspondent and now she is reinventing again with her Lady Gang podcast and business.
  4. Amy Porterfield, in my opinion, is the #1 best person to follow online if you're building an online business right now. Period. Plus her voice is so calming she could narrate a meditation app. If you're trying to market yourself and your products online, listen to her podcast every day!
  5. Gary Vee, specifically his meetings with artists and entrepreneurs where he brainstorms with them. These conversations are usually tucked into DailyVee episodes, or they're in AskGaryVee broadcasts. I don't watch all of his stuff anymore because woah. It's a lot! But I do like to hear him problem solve in real time for people - worth digging through YouTube to find! If you're an entrepreneur or aspiring, I recommend all of his books too, especially the brand new one, Crushing It!

Honorable Mention:

Lindsay Teague Moreno's Boss Up Podcast (entrepreneurship)
Business Women Losing Weight Podcast (health)

On Instagram:

Candace Cameron Bure  (just a fun, down to earth celebrity to follow)
DeVon Franklin (quotes and sermon clips, so good!)
Steven Furtick (sermons, powerful one-liners)
Laura McKowen (sobriety)
Rachel Hollis (inspiring mompreneur and stylish blogger, author)
The Home Edit (gorgeous home organization and hilarious InstaStories)
KevOnStage (comedy)
John Crist (comedy)
Sara Blakely (hilarious, down to earth founder of Spanx)
Delta Girl Frames (gorgeous frames and funny InstaStories!)

So, who are your faves? I'd love to add to this list!

None of the influencers above paid for placement.

Friday Favorites: Fix My Face Edition!

Solutions for Real People with Real Acne!

Y'all. I am so flipping tired of beauty bloggers that recommend products for trouble skin when "trouble skin" for them is one rogue zit that one week of the month. YOU DON'T KNOW MY LIFE, WOMAN.

People ask me about my skin and makeup because I get on video a million times a week. If you're an OG KH frand, you know this has been an ongoing struggle for me and I always use #allthefilters when posting on Instagram, and I am honest about that. So, you can trust that this list is for realsies.

My Skin

I went on Accutane twice in my teens, I have seen basically every cream and facewash and mask that's out there. I have severe sun damage and if that's not enough, eczema, even on my face, leaving patches of skin with no pigment. So much win. I am now at that lovely point in life where I have to deal with the start of "fine lines" AND zits. But if I use the wrinkle cream I'll break out and if I use the zit cream I'll dry up and look like a paper mache me made out of sandpaper ahhhhhh.

Thanks, Lord, this time of life raising tiny humans wasn't hard enough. Preciate it. In October of 2017 my face was a disaster, as you can see above, and now, January 2018, it is amazeballs. Here is what worked.

  1. Spironolactone (not pictured)
I really really didn't want to get on a prescription, but video is my job. I knew that my face was distracting me during videos, keeping me from making videos, hurting my confidence and more. So, I went to my doc and she was like let's just do Accutane again and I thought ARE YOU INSANE? Maybe she did that on purpose so I'd be like Spiro! Cool! This is a prescription testosterone blocker and I will warn you that it makes you pee more and I felt like it caused lethargy. After all, testosterone is the get up and rip the day's face off hormone. So I only take a half dose, one in the morning. It took about 4 months to kick in. Now I don't feel the side effects, so I do recommend this if things are getting so bad it's time to go to the Doc!
  2. Mario Badescu Spot Treatment
This stuff comes in a TINY bottle for $17 and it's worth every penny, why? Because it dries out big ol honker zits overnight, without leaving a dry scabby situation behind. If I weren't married I'd ask Mario to marry me, this treatment is that good.
  3. Rodan & Fields Active Hydration Serum
I am not all RF All Day like some, there have been products I've tried with high hopes that didn't work, including their Unblemish system and Redfine system. But this stuff made my skin feel different literally the next day after I tried it. Not kidding. Suddenly my forehead was starting to look like innocent baby butt again. Amazing.
  4. Goldfaden MD Microdermabrasion Scrub
This scrub is life. I would only recommend using it after your skin is starting to clear up. Basically it left my skin feeling like a pillow cloud, and I could tell it was clarifying my skin as well, because that eczema spot started to really become obvious, because my overall skin tone is so much clearer I can see the differences more clearly.
  5. Alba Botanica Calming Mask (not pictured)
You picked your face to death, then you wore a different cream each night, then you got dry spots. Time to CALM DOWN. This is the best calming mask. I bought a tub of expensive stuff you keep in the fridge, filled with rainbow dust and cucumber guts, this cheapo one is better, grab it on Amazon, thank me later!

Honorable Mention: I live in this Proactiv Skin Purifying Mask mask sometimes, and it really does help clear things up overnight, and leave my skin feeling soft, HOWEVER it sometimes leaves behind a dry scabby mess which I then pick and scratch to death because I have a problem and I can't stop myself. So I am using it less because I realized even though it worked in the short term, I would pick and my fight those red spots would last a week or more. If you're NOT a picker, get this mask for sure! If you are, use at your own risk.

Honorable Mention: Keto diet, maybe. Some say keto (eliminating sugar and flour, eating a lot of fat and some protein, less than 20-30 grams carbs per day) can clear up your skin. I can't be 100% sure that keto is contributing, because I also used the products above, but many articles claim sugar is bad for your skin and healthy fats are good for your skin, sooooo....

I'd love to know if you try these products and they help you, because I understand how hard it is to live with acne, especially when you're not a teen anymore, and especially especially if you want to be active on livestreams and instagram and build your brand or business with video.

If you're in the thick of skin hell, I recommend full coverage makeup, amazing ring lighting, low res images with filters, and sitting on your hands or getting bubble wrap or SOMETHING so you don't pick. Sometime soon I'll post a make up post but until then, remember it's who you are and HOW YOU MAKE PEOPLE FEEL that matters, if you're spreading your sparkly butterflies of love with people and being your best self, they will forget all about the small mountain range on your skin. Promise.

Getting Through the Rough Spots

We Are Not Pigs!

Hopefully you know what I mean because you watched today's Quick Pep Talk.

The tactic for getting through temptation, a slump, a setback, a convenient excuse to exit your Goals Highway - KEEP GOING. Sometimes when running I literally think to myself, "Left, Right, Left, Right" to remind me that a downhill is coming. A better song to run to will come on soon. Minutes are flying by I just have to keep moving my legs. I literally use this same analogy to walk by cookies, to avoid watching a webinar or lesson that's going to tempt me to change all my plans because look how easily they made six figures in just six days!? To ignore voices in my head that say my videos don't get enough traction and I should quit.

Left. Right.

Left. Right.

Past temptation.

Out of a slump.

Past convenient excuses.

On to your mile marker, your next small win, your big victory you've been working on for months.

Onward. Onward. Onward.

I'd love to know what you think of the new QPTS and what you thought of this one, especially the dogs , so leave me a comment on the Facebook post!

How I Made This Video (and the Christmas Mashup

  • This project took me about a week, but I started dreaming it up in December.
  • First week of January, research motivational songs.
  • Take key lyrics from all the songs and put them in one google doc.
  • Start to piece together lyrics in a way that makes sense, but also listen to the songs to see if the musical transition will work.
  • Get in my closet with my laptop and my microphone and sing through the main melody all the way through as a guide. Some day I will have a real life studio and a sound engineer and it will be amazing!
  • Add metronome tracks
  • Start adding in all the parts, one song at a time, usually starting with oohs and aahs and the bass line
  • Listen through all the songs again to hear more countermelody parts to put in
  • Sing through and add the real main vocal again
  • Listen to it about one billion times to try and mix it and perfect the transitions.
Here's an actual screen shot of this file!

  • Export track to mp3 and get my white wall set up and Ring Lights in my tiny home office.
  • Record the video parts. This is hard and I don't do it very well yet, because you have to listen and really remember each part and lipsync only that part and I always get them jumbled up!
  • Then I edit each video part to perfectly match up with the mp3
  • Then I add each part into the video one at a time, matching up the videos to both eachother and the mp3. It's exhausting and definitely my least favorite part.
  • After the video is put together I add the lyric captions manually. Again, tedious and not fun!
  • Export and post to Facebook & YouTube
  • Hyperventilate nervously in the corner hoping people enjoy it and share it.
  • The end!

If you love these videos, definitely let me know in the comments on the Facebook post because as you can see they are a lot of work! (But I do love them =)

How to Stick With Your Goals - Something No One Talks About!!

Mindset Hack to Actually Stick With It!

Let Me Give It To You Straight

I've talked about how the beginning of new things feels awkward and lame, but I wanted to add something else: IT SUCKS.

As I explain in the video, people get pumped at the beginning of a new year, new goal, new project, and then wonder if they're doing something wrong when they suddenly hit week 2 or 3 and hate their new goal and every one and every thing and if they have to eat one more salad they'll stab someone...

So what do we do?

We prepare for the pits. Pits of self-pity, sorrow, anger, hunger, impatience - we plan ahead for the trouble spots and envision ourselves as PacMan (watch the video above for more on that - it really does help!)

My Personal Examples

As I told you last week, I have set one goal for each area of my life. Let's break down a few of those and how I've prepared for the low points:

  • Faith: More daily prayer and bible reading each day, specifically with my little one so I can lead by example.
So. She's 4. She doesn't always want to read the bible when she has a stack of bright pink princess books, right? So I'm prepared for what to say to her, how to compromise, and how to explain this is our new nightly routine.
  • Health: I am not going to share my specific goal with you but as y'all know I want to "make it" in entertainment and I need to be a LOT smaller. No more excuses. As someone who is used to eating chocolate everynight for the last 3 years, and wine before that, I know night time is my big struggle. So, I have decaf coffee with full cream (acceptable for the Keto diet I'm adopting) and I save a few grams of carbs just for salted almonds to snack on.
Is it as glorious as a half bag of chocolate chips? Um no. But like I said in the video, I envision each evening with almonds as a small dot that gets me to a big dot - feeling totally comfortable on camera, even with size -2 celebrity guests. Note: my goal is not a size zero, my goal is to feel bangin' even if I'm a few sizes bigger than them. To feel like I am the best version of me, trim and fit and free from worrying about arm flab and underchin. Free to focus on the work instead of how I look doing the work.
  • Home: I want to get a housekeeper this year. I suck at keeping my home organized and picked up and clean. I would just rather record dorky videos in a pacman costume than sweep, can you blame me?! So, the interesting thing about this goal is that I have to A) increase my income in order to pay for this because I don't want to move funds around with Pursuit Media, and B) get more organized. I have been fired by a house cleaner in the past -  YES, REALLY. I KNOW. IT'S REALLY EMBARRASSING, DON'T RUB IT IN.
In our twenties, my husband and I hired one after we had just gotten our second dog, but she didn't want to deal with our piles. Piles of paper, piles of clean laundry, etc. She wanted to clean the house not organize it for us. So, every time I sort, stack, pack, and deliver another giant load of goods for goodwill when I'd rather be watching netflix with my almonds, I think "one step closer to never mopping again! huzzah!"

I'd love to know some of your goals and how you are going to plan ahead for the hard parts! Leave a comment on the Facebook post.

The Best of 2017

Welcome to a new series here at KH HQ - Friday favorites! In these posts I will answer your FAQs about what products I use, who I follow online, which apps/tactics/people/practices I prefer for motivation, inspiration, productivity and laughs. If I can't live without it, you'll find it in this series. I LOVE reading these types of posts from other people so I hope you find this fun and helpful!

My Top 5 From 2017

This list excludes my alltime favorites like, you know, God, husband, child family, best friends. Doi!

  1. My Team
I need to devote a separate post to this tiny but mighty team, but seriously, this post is about what I couldn't live without in the last year - Chatoya and Haley definitely fall into that category! They handle email, travel and guest coordination, social media management, research gathering, organizing, final production processes for the show, managing and shipping giveaways, and so much more! They're also just plain fun to be around! Also, she's not on my team and she's one of my best friends in the world, but Stephanie Jones (Giving Gal) is an honorary team memeber, an advisor and an accountability buddy. She keeps me focused and helps me brainstorm and I would've been lost this past year without her!
  2. Spring App
If you had told me a year ago that a running app would be one of my favorite things in a year, I wouldda bopped you on the head. This app allows you to pick music based on your pace and it's real music you actually like, not weird workout tracks. It helped me get to 4 miles at a time (a lot for a non-runner!) and I can run 2 miles at a 10/min mile which is also big for a non-runner!This new habit is not about health or becoming a runner. It is about me defying my own negative self-talk and keeping promises to myself. It's about me proving to me that I can do more that I think. That's why running is a big deal to me right now and this app helped me arrive to such a cool place within myself. If you want to start a running discipline, HIGHLY RECOMMEND. Get it here for iPhones
  3. Deva Curl
I get asked about my hair so much. So so much. My hair is like my trusty side kick and I believe my hair journey deserves it's own post, that's how much y'all inquire about my locks. But trust me, if you look at my photos and think "Wow, those curls are bangin!" It's because of a Deva Curl hair cut and using their products. For realsies, buy some, watch some youtube turorials on how to transform your curly hair, and thank me later!
  4. Jesus Calling
Sometime in the past year, a mentor told me her rule: no reading anything else until  you read the Word. I thought dang, that's good. So I stole her routine. When I pull up my phone in the morning, no email, no checking notifications or text messages. Bible first. I use YouVersion for that. But then I also read Jesus Calling every morning and I just find it really insightful and helpful for focusing my day before the crazy starts. I have a toddler, you remember, so the crazy usually starts at 6am! I use the kindle version(All I want in life is to feel, do, and be as shiny and luminous as Hugh Jackman in this image.)
  5. The Greatest Showman
This just barely made because I saw it at the very end of December, but I have never loved a movie so much I wanted to go watch it in theaters again immediately. The only exception MIGHT be  the Force Awakens but I am still not over what happened with Han. It's been a couple years now but I still just can't even. I have no evens where Han is concerned.Anyway - this movie is inspiring, motivating, insightful, brilliant to watch, glorious to listen to, it's every thing. If you don't love musicals you won't love it, but I bet you'll still like it. If you love musicals, you'll die. You just die. Go see it the first chance you have! Beyond the movie itself, they produced a lot of making-of clips that are almost just as moving as the original story. It's about chasing big dreams, by the way, so go figure, I'm obsessed. Not convinced? The soundtrack is #1 on amazon right now!!!

Honorable Mention:

This interview with TD Jakes that I've watched more than once, unsual for me unless I'm researching a guest.

High Performance Habits by Brendon Burchard, want to read it again already!

Sophie Kinsella - I worked hard on unplugging more this year and a few of her fun novels helped me do that!

The Two-Word Secret to Changing Your Life This Year

HAPPY NEW YEAR!....but do you have the right planner?! Should you buy a few (8) more planners?! A Quick Pep Talk for how we're going to crush it in 2018. I'm all in on these QPTs y'all - let me know your favorite part in the comments 😂 😳 😂

Posted by Kelsey Humphreys on Tuesday, January 2, 2018

Happy New Year 2018!

...But do you have the right planner?! (Quick Pep Talk)

I hope you enjoy the new, old format of my weekly Quick Pep Talks. To hear two words that will help you change your life this year, watch above.

But in case you're curious, I do have a word for the year, which I'll share later, and like I said in the video, a goal for each section of my life which I list as:

Faith, Marriage, Family, Health, Finances, Friends, Career, Home, and Fun. But the details of my word and my goals are for a different post.

Since the video talked about planners, I wanted to share that I've recovered from obsessive planner buying and I do in fact have an actual planning system now. This "system" has helped me produce literally hundreds of videos, hundreds of posts, and thousands of images in the past 2-3 years. Plus, regular live streams, trips around the country with my gear, facilitation of multiple crew members in different cities,  and you know, do laundry, make dinner, pick up toys, just living my best glam (and pretty productive) life.

  1. The Notes App on my iPhone - Literally my whole life. If I lose my phone days since a back up, I'm effed. This is where I put every single passing idea.Like when that guy set off a sound sensor on one of those singing bass fish things in the quiet home decor section of the store and literally ran away because he couldn't figure out how to turn it off. That's funny, I can use that. Goes in my Random Ideas note.I have different notes for different things that I update sometimes hourly: To buy, funny things my kid says I don't want to forget, passwords, Instagram posts and hashtags, books to read, it goes on and on.
  2. Google Tasks - Projects that I need to get to sometime soon. I LOVE that they have a little checkmark and get crossed off, but don't go away altogether, so I have the satisfaction of seeing how hard I'm crushing it. This is JUST projects, not sub items within a project.
  3. Dump Notebook - This is where I mindmap ideas brainstorm the little one liners from my phone. I also make project-specific to do lists as I'm working, for example my tasks window will say "Jan 2 Quick Pep Talk" and my notebook will have a running list of all the subtasks.I get a new dump notebook for each year but I haven't bought 2018's yet. I prefer the Punctuate brand from Barnes & Noble (I can't find a link but they've had this notebook in different cover designs for about three years in stores.) It's big enough, lays flat without spirals, and has the elastic to hold my place or hold my crap together (because I usually have a pencil or pen and 20 or so crumpled post-it notes tucked in there.)
  4. Boring Monthly Planner - I need a large monthly spread to look at a few weeks at a glance. When are videos dropping? Am I giving myself enough space in between videos? Which days am I traveling? and so on. I got this planner at Target. I can't find a link to it?! Is Mercury in retrograde and what exactly does it mean if it is?!
  5. Trello - When my assistant and intern get in on a project outside of our ongoing tasks, we use Trello to track it all. For example, redesigning this site and merging The Pursuit website with this one. We don't have to have trello boards for interviews anymore. We have that down to an art now. We fancy. You can set up trello fo free!
  6. Google Calendar Time Blocking But Just Barely - Most of the people I interview who run brands or create a lot of content use time blocking. I put a time block on my calendar with an alarms for one thing, every single day: 4pm - workout. I need to see it pop up on my phone.  It just helps me. I'm weak, y'all. I plan to add more of these into my schedule but I don't know that I want my phone buzzing more than it already is, so I'm testing this.

Oh the things I do NOT do...

This seems like a lot because I'm long a winded and self-indulgent writer, but I promise it is not.

I don't time block my days, I don't have a first 5 minute thing, or a last five minute thing, or a Sunday night thing.

You know what I do have? A toddler.

I don't use timer apps, I don't have daily Asana or Trello boards, I don't ever have inbox zero. Life is too short for that kind of pressure. I have inbox hot mess erryday and that's fine. I don't have a planner that tracks shopping lists and water intake, I need the freedom of a good ol' notebook.

I hope this inspires you that you can become a productive, high-functioning member of society with a SIMPLE, somewhat messy "system." Find what works for you so that you can stick with that you intend to do in each area of your life. If you're interested in the planner I created called the LIVE Life Planner 2018 - watch the quick pep talk, above!

Love this? Leave a comment on the Facebook post and let me know.

REAL LIFE, in case you thought I had a perfect, pretty white desk and I'm not still a mess while crazy productive:

Fun Stuff, Music, Popular Videos

Merry Christmas Moms!

A Loving A Capella Parody from me to you.

As you all may know, I've decided to incorporate more and more music into my content because a) I love it, remember my first dream was to be the next Sara Bareilles+Beyonce superstar. and b) I really want to have more musical guests on the show, and musicians don't care about press, they just want to do cool stuff. They want to perform or do carpool karaoke - so I need to show them I can hang and we can create something cool together.

I documented the creation of the video on my Instastories because I had wrote the lyrics on Thursday, recorded vocals Friday and Saturday, recorded and edited all the video Sunday, and posted Monday afternoon. Was it worth it? 25K+ views and a message for a speaking gig proves that YES, it was worth it!

Love it? Leave a comment for me on the Facebook post!

Why did you choose to have Lindsay as a guest?
I have a LOT of amazing viewers and readers who want to build a successful MLM side hustle or full time business, and Lindsay is one of the absolute best people to interview in that arena!

How’d you get the interview?
She reached out to me through mutual friends! Whaaaat?! It's finally happening guys!

Where was the interview?
At a rented studio space in Denver, CO where she lives.

What was she like in person?
So funny, whip smart, a straight shooter and SUPER generous, we talked forever off-camera. There is a guest every so often who I genuinely want to be besties with IRL, she is one of them! (Also, she's like the Beyonce of MLMs, she can't go to conferences without getting mobbed, she has to legit worry about stalkers and she has a lot of haters which we all know is a true sign of success. She's a BIG DEAL.)
